Sorry for your loss Bunbury. I crashed mine as well just about a week ago. Some what similar to your event however I am pretty sure what caused mine to 'fly away' out of control and crash finally into either a tall tree or a house. The result was the top case was split open at one of the motors and the landing gear ripped off. Bought a new case and recently finished building it up again whith components from the old SD. Here is my story:
I made two modifications to my SD. First, I installed a larger battery (8000mah) which fit just fine, and second , I installed an external 'safe/are' switching device that allows me to not have to remove the top cover every time I want to power the drone on.
My SD was is an Auto+ version that I purchased in Sept. It came with the older flat configuration top cover. In flying that configuration of drone I found out that the internal GPS/Compass is quite sensitive to the magnetic field from the large power wires from the battery. If I wasn't careful to make sure those wires were hidden behind the battery and well away from the GPS/Compass , the SD would have a tendency to start the 'toilet bowl' circle type of flight pattern. However, when the wires were well stowed/hidden behind the battery, it flew perfect. I have flown over 30 minutes with the new battery and conducted all modes of flying from manual control to GPS aided flights to 'follow me' mode to waypoint follow modes. No problem what so ever.
However, when I installed the 'safe/arm' plug into the new GPS/Compass top cover (see photo) , the unit flew ok at first but eventually flew away and eventually crashed. The cause of the problem was the battery power wires running from the battery up to the 'safe/arm' unit in the cover and back to the connection with the power board. Since that fly away event, I relocated the 'safe/arm' to the main SD body just behind the battery (see photo #2). In that location the SD calibrates easily and flys perfect again.
